RIHA - A verdict of non-prosecution was issued in the investigation into the death of Abdurrahim Yüksel, who allegedly committed suicide in a solitary cell in prison.
The investigation into the death of judicial prisoner Abdurrahim Yüksel, who allegedly committed suicide by setting himself on fire in Urfa T-Type Closed Prison No 1 on 20 July 2024, was declared non-prosecution.
Yüksel, who was sentenced to 11 years and 3 months on the charges of "attempted murder" and "tampering with evidence", was arrested on 10 July 2024 and put into prison. According to the allegations; Yüksel was put in a solitary cell on the grounds of a fight in the ward where he was arrested and set his body on fire.
After the incident, the prison prosecutor told Yüksel's relatives that "the lighter was overlooked". Urfa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office decided not to prosecute in the investigation launched against the prison staff for "causing death by negligence" and "misconduct in office".
The prosecutor's office claimed that the personnel of the institution intervened in Yüksel's death in a timely and complete manner, and that he was immediately transferred to the hospital and that no intention, fault or negligence of the personnel was found.
'DECISION WILL BE APPEALED'
In the decision on non-prosecution, the statement of the prison prosecutor to Yüksel's relatives after the incident that "the lighter was overlooked" was not included in the decision. Yüksel's family will appeal the decision of non-prosecution through their lawyers.
