Protests enter 13th day in Iran: Hundreds of thousands on the streets

NEWS CENTER – As protests entered their 13th day in Iran, hundreds of thousands took to the streets overnight, maintaining demonstrations across the country.
 
Protests that began on 28 December against the economic crisis and quickly evolved into mass calls for freedom and opposition to the regime have now reached their 13th day. 
 
Throughout the night, people across Iran refused to leave the streets, continuing demonstrations in many regions. Marches were held overnight in the provinces of Gilan, Fars, West Azerbaijan and Kurdistan, with protesters chanting slogans such as “Death to the dictator” and “Azadî (Freedom)”.
 
Events overnight unfolded as follows:
 
*Protests continued in many parts of Gilan province. Responding to the general strike call, residents kept their shops closed. In the city of Rasht, crowds set streets ablaze.
 
*In Chitgar, one of Tehran’s busiest districts, residents staged a mass march chanting slogans against Khomeini.
 
*In Karaj province, whose population largely consists of Persians and Alevis, residents poured into the streets in many cities.
 
*Protests continued to grow in Ilam and Kermanshah, among the cities that have become symbolic since the beginning of the unrest. Thousands marched chanting “Bimre koletî” (Down with slavery).
 
*Thousands also took to the streets in Tabriz, one of the most important cities in West Azerbaijan.
 
*In Tehran, the starting point of the protests, marches that began with thousands swelled into tens of thousands.
 
*Women launched protests by burning images of Khomeini, while portraits of Khomeini hanging in many cities were also set on fire.
 
*In numerous areas, vehicles belonging to regime forces were set ablaze, and regime buildings were torched in Tehran.
