ANTALYA – The demands of three prisoners who went on hunger strike in protest at being held in what they describe as a “well-type” prison have been accepted.
The three prisoners, held at Antalya Döşemealtı High Security Prison, had launched a hunger strike demanding transfer to another facility, objecting to conditions in the prison they refer to as “well-type”.
Tahsin Sağaltıcı and Gürkan Türkoğlu had been on hunger strike for 268 days, while Hüseyin Özen had continued his protest for 248 days. The prisoners, who were taken to hospital 11 days ago and refused treatment, have now had their demands accepted. It is understood they will be transferred to Antalya Type L Closed Prison. Although the demands were accepted yesterday, the transfer has not yet been carried out.
In a written statement on social media, the Human Rights Association (İHD) Central Prison Commission confirmed the development, saying: “We will continue to firmly defend prisoners’ right to life and conditions compatible with human dignity against the isolation and segregation policies implemented in these new-type high-security prisons.”
The statement added that the prisoners ended their protest after their demands were accepted. The prisoners had been taken to Antalya City Hospital on 13 April after their health conditions deteriorated and remain there.
