ISTANBUL – Tanya Kara, spokesperson for the Socialist Women’s Assemblies (SKM), warned that society is being redesigned on the basis of misogyny and emphasized: “It is very important to organize the struggle for an equal and free life in the most effective way in the upcoming period.”
Responding to sermons from the Presidency of Religious Affairs targeting women and their rights, Tanya Kara stated that attacks on women’s rights in Turkey and worldwide stem from the crisis of the patriarchal system. She highlighted President Erdoğan’s plan to declare 2025 the “Year of Family” and the establishment of family and religious guidance offices under Diyanet as moves that deepen interventions into women’s freedoms.
Tanya Kara pointed out that the sermons label homosexuality as deviance, criticize women’s attire under moral grounds, and attack inheritance rights, all part of efforts to reshape society based on misogyny and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment.
Emphasizing the need for united efforts to protect hard-won women’s rights, Tanya Kara concluded: “An effective struggle is needed against attacks targeting women’s bodies, lives, and fertility. Organizing the struggle for an equal and free life in the most effective way is crucial in the upcoming period.”
